How to come up with a company name

Posted on 10.03.202110.03.2021

The creation of the name can be called the stage of the birth of the company. Sounds pretentious, right? This is the only way it is, because under the chosen name the brand will be spinning all its “life”. Changing it later is costly in all respects, so it is better to take your time and think carefully about this part.

In this article we will talk about how to come up with a brand name – we will analyze the most popular and effective methods.

How to come up with a brand / organization name

There are a myriad of ways in which you can come up with a name for your company. Below I will describe the most common methods.

Surnames

Ford, Korkunov, Kalashnikov, Tinkoff and Kaspersky alone are worth something. True, here the brand is tied to the reputation of its creator, but there are positive aspects in this too.

Personal names

This is one of the easiest methods to create a name for an organization. You just need to take as a basis the name of the creator, founder. Only here there is one caveat – if the name is widespread enough, it will be difficult to stand out from competitors. But this does not mean that the method is ineffective.

Patronymics

This is part of the generic name, that is, the patronymic. Quite a specific method, sometimes denoting an overly close relationship to the consumer, but it looks very confidential. “Ilyich”, “Petrovich”, “Alekseich”, “Hottabych” – all this refers to patronymics.

Combinations of words

Here you can simply combine existing words that ideally describe certain qualities of the company, and thus make new combinations. Good examples of promoted companies are Lukoil or Adidas.

Acronyms or abbreviations

If the names are too long, try using acronyms or abbreviations from the words. By the way, such options are often found in brands operating in the international market. There are many successful examples – IKEA, MYTH, BMW, GUM and MTS.

Nicknames or pseudonyms

Here it is worth being careful and carefully checking the history of nicknames. But with this method, you can choose interesting options that correspond to the company s concept.

Titles, titles or nationalities

You also need to be more careful with the latter. But you can experiment with titles or titles. Examples are “Prince”, “Emperor”, “King”, “Monarch” and so on.

Literature and mythology

Some interesting names of organizations come from various myths, fairy tales and other folklore. And not just anyhow – the company thus appropriates the positive qualities of the taken character. Here, for example, for a beauty salon “Aphrodite” or “Vasilisa the Beautiful” are consonant, alcohol stores can be called “Bacchus” or “Dionysus”, ie the names of the gods of winemaking (and not only).

History and culture

Names of this type are formed from the names of real people who have made a certain contribution to the development of culture. Sounds good – “Gogol Center”, “Yesenin”, “Dostaevsky” and so on.

Nature

It is also a popular way of creating a name, in which the names of plants, animals, as well as geological terms are taken as a basis. “Adamas”, “Bison”, “Beluga” and others – everything belongs to this category. Perhaps the most striking and successful example is Wildberries.

Place names

In this case, the names of various geographical objects are used – rivers, settlements, relief areas and even space objects, be it Volga, Everest, Prague, Milky Way or others. This also includes the creation of names from some invented, fabulous places (“Eldorado”).

Company name generators

If you can t come up with a company name yourself, you can use special online services. You don t have to put all the work on these services, you can just take inspiration from them.

GenLogo

Multifunctional service, because with its help you can come up with not only a name for a company, but also a logo. To create a name, you need to select the appropriate category and decide on the alphabet (Cyrillic or Latin). At the same time, by the way, you can choose a domain.

PlayName

Also a great online service that I used the other day. First, you describe the type of company, then choose words-associations, at the end you decide on the benefits for customers. The service will analyze the entered queries and provide some pretty interesting options. About 20 names are generated for free, the rest can be viewed only after purchasing the PRO-tariff.

Creating a brand name using PlayName

I hope one of the methods or services will help you come up with the perfect name for your company. Good luck!
